Saving Umpqua Valley AVA

greedWhen you talk about the wine industry in the USA, you inevitably end up with Napa Valley as the model.  While the wines of Napa can be some of the best offered in California, the fact is there’s plenty of premium wine to go around from other regions.  So what makes Napa so special?  Easy, marketing.  And the proximity to the Bay Area.

For some locals there’s a bit of pessimism that our little wine region will end up like Napa Valley, which means that the corporations will eventually take over here as they have done in Napa.

To date there is little interest from the global wine corporations in the Umpqua Valley.  I have heard that Shutter-Home has purchased acreage in the Dixonville area, but besides that our wineries remain family owned and run.

Rest assured that the Umpqua Valley will not end up another corporate playground for the wine industry.  We lack the the two elements essential for the corporations:  volume and population.  We will always be the “other” wine region in Oregon.
