Did you know that Douglas County is said to have 180 different soil types?! What that means for the winemaker is that you can likely find just the right soil for the grapes you want to grow.
Back in Mendocino County there is a winery with a great wine called Redhead Zin. It's not the color of the winemakers hair, it's because of the red earth of the estate vineyard. Those two words, "red earth", can get a winemaker all excited. I do recall Dyson DeMara of HillCrest Vineyard, telling the story of his first visit to the vineyard and how he knew it was THE PLACE, because of the red earth.
Join the Beckers (Becker Viineyard) and myself at the SleepInn on Mar 31 @ 7pm for a discussion on the soil types of their vineyard. Most interesting!
