The Amazing Umpqua Valley!
Wine history marches on. Just the other day they dug up an ancient winery in Eastern Europe. And now we have the Umpqua Valley AVA.
So you see, it's still happening. The culture of wine has even spread to Southwestern Oregon. I dare say there's not a plethora of new wine regions in the world. We'll cut up the existing acreage into smaller and smaller AVA's.
That the Umpqua Valley AVA is the Final Frontier of Wine, is the amazing part. California had been on on steady incline well before anyone took the challenge to plant vinifera in Oregon. Our fine wine history began in 1961 with Richard Sommer.
As far as our local history goes, the next chapter is just getting a fresh start. The Southern Oregon Wine Institute at our local Community College (UCC) is well under construction and will fuel the future winemakers of our region and beyond.
The world of wine is coming to Roseburg, like it or not. Either get on board or move aside.
