Local winemakers and consumers alike have been biting their nails for months over the current harvest. With a sketchy start to the season we all wondered if we’d even have a harvest! And it’s true that the Spring weather has pushed the harvest back by weeks, but the dooms-day feeling are a thing of the past now. In a word, it’s a mixed bag out there, and we should see some very nice wines this vintage.
Overall though, it’s a troublesome harvest. Many vintners have had to drop fruit prior to the harvest to help focus on the remaining fruit. Some have found Botrytis (Noble Rot) on their fruit for the first time. And it seems the Robins have moved in with their bigger tummies to help themselves to the ripe fruit.
You know it’s harvest around here because it sounds like a mini war zone with all the propane cannons going off, shotgun blasts, recorded bird distress sounds, and netting. All in an effort to save as much fruit for us humans before the birds and deer make a feast of the grapes.
And you thought that being a winemaker was lots of fun!
