Diane and I are out at the wineries a lot these days and we have noticed that the tasting rooms are busier than ever. As word of the Umpqua Valley’s exceptional wines gets out there , more and more wine lovers are coming out to enjoy an afternoon of tasting.
Here’s a few pointers to better enjoy your adventure. With a few tools you can get to the end of the day without losing your ability to actually “taste” the wine.
First. Don’t just drink wine! Take a bottle or two of water with you. Wine (alcohol) causes dehydration. However, avoid using your wine glass for water. Any water in the glass will dilute the wine. Ask for a separate glass.
Second. Eat. Unless your goal is to get silly, you had better eat something that complements the wine as you taste thru-out the day. Our tours feature a full gourmet lunch in order to keep you sharp. Pack a picnic and enjoy one of the many wonderful picnic area at a local winery.
Third. Use the dump bucket. You won’t be offending the winemaker by dumping a portion of the wine after you’ve tasted. FYI: An average pour at a winery is one once. After 25 pours, you’ve had a bottle of wine!
With these three little tips you can even “taste” the wines of the last winery. Hope to see you out there. And if you want the full story on winetasting 101, come on one of our tours!
