If the latest Oregon Wine Awards made anything clear it’s the fact that Willamette Valley is a one trick pony. And if all you’re after is some great Pinot Noir then enjoy. But if you’d like to experience a diverse selection of wines in one neat package then head for the Umpqua Valley.
The Awards have a section for Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Every one of the awards were given to either an Umpqua Valley winery or Southern Oregon winery.
This is what I’ve been preaching all along. Umpqua Valley AVA has it all. Even Pinot Noir. We are the “little wine valley that could".” Case in point: HillCrest has released a Petite Sirah (Gabor) from local fruit. While it’s not the California style motor oil PS, it is an excellent well-crafted wine.
Congratulations to Spangler for their Cab Sav and to Delfino, Reustle, and Spangler for their Syrahs.
