There’s no stopping the Umpqua Valley AVA. You can add HV Cellars to the list of tasting rooms pouring Umpqua Valley wines. Diane and I, along with our good friends Carlton and Jenifer stopped by the small but tidy tasting room of HV Cellars, located on Hwy 42, West of Winston, on Sunday. Honestly, expectations were somewhat low as the winery makes fruit wines, as well as, vinifera wines. Oh, how wrong you can be!
Goes to show that having an attitude will get you into trouble. While we don’t make a habit of drinking fruit wines (blackberry, etc), we certainly learned that they have their place in your cellar.
The main attraction though was their fine wines. The grapes come from various vineyards, including Red Hills of Douglas County AVA. The selection was varied with a Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, a Cab blend they label Donna Rosa, Syrah, and a Baco Noir off the Melrose Vineyards.
For me the star of the line up was the Donna Rosa. What I call a happy little wine. While it’s Cab based (with Merlot) it leans towards a lighter rounded wine, not wimpy at all, but not the heavy hitter some Cab’s are. I could taste the two varietals that work nicely in harmony.
Keep ‘em coming Umpqua Valley winemakers!
P.S. Thanks for voting for this blog! We are now at 200 votes that puts us in 162nd place. Go Umpqua Valley AVA!
